of his new film, Karski &amp; the Lords of Humanity. The film tells the story of Jan Karski, the Polish resistance fighter who risked his life to reveal the horrors of the Warsaw Ghetto. This innovative documentary in English and Polish sheds light on Karski\u2019s daring exploits and important legacy 100 years after his birth. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong> We\u2019re grateful that Mr. Gr\u00fcnberg took the time to answer some of our questions about the film\u2019s subject and his unique way of portraying Karksi\u2019s life using animation. <\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em> MJH: Why you were drawn to Karski\u2019s story <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em> Slawomir Gr\u00fcnberg: Jan Karski is an example of a modern day hero. I wanted to present an earnest portrait of a man who juggled between life and death while fulfilling a desperate mission to stop the annihilation of European Jews. As a member of the Polish underground during World War II, Karski took a huge risk by infiltrating the Warsaw Ghetto and a Nazi transit camp. There he witnessed the horrors of the Holocaust in order to carry a first-hand report to the Western Allies and the world\u2019s leaders. When I first heard the story, I was very inspired that this extraordinary individual was only 25 years old at the time of his mission.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em> MJH: What you hope audiences will walk away thinking or feeling about his life and legacy? <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em> SG: We hope our audience will be diverse, not only in terms of age, but also in terms of religion, ethnicity, and cultural background. We would like the viewers to learn about Karski\u2019s World War II mission, and also come away with an appreciation of Karski\u2019s contribution to the humanities. We are especially interested in engaging university and high-school students. We are reaching out to them via Facebook, Twitter, and You Tube. Having presented excerpts from the work-in-progress, we are receiving very positive responses to the use of animation in the project, especially from educators who continue to approach us expressing their desire to use the completed film in their work. <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em> MJH: We\u2019d love to hear a little about why you chose to partially animate the film. <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em> SG: My inspiration to use animation in my project was the Israeli film &#8220;Waltz with Bashir,&#8221; which I found extremely moving. A similar innovative fusion of technologies was employed by our team to create a unique film reality, and to bring Karski\u2019s compelling story to life. <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong><em> The film employs animation intertwined with documentary scenes and archival footage, including authentic voice-over by Jan Karski himself. Thanks to the animation techniques, we are able to recreate the events, which took place during Karski\u2019s World War II mission including his treacherous visit to the Warsaw Ghetto, where he witnessed the indignities and traumas to which Jews were being subjected in Nazi-occupied Poland only months preceding the Final Solution. <\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>COMMENTS:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I&#8217;ve seen this film and it&#8217;s a compelling portrait of the first man to let the Western allies (including FDR) know what the Nazis were doing to the Jews in Poland, and yet, no one took him seriously. What&#8217;s best about this film are the interviews taken of Karski and shocking footage of the Warsaw Ghetto that I&#8217;ve never seen. \u00a0R.S. \u00a0NY<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>wonderful project!!! must be seen by all \u2026.. Good luck with the presentation around the world!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>ABOUT THE FILM<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Karski &amp; The Lords of Humanity&#8221; is a partially animated documentary film about Jan Karski, who risked his life to try to prevent the Holocaust<\/strong>. <strong>Using a groundbreaking technique that combines unique archival footage with animated sequences, Emmy-winning filmmaker Slawomir Gr\u00fcnberg, re-creates and dramatizes the death-defying mission of Jan Karski, the Polish underground courier who travelled across occupied Europe, infiltrating the Warsaw Ghetto and a Nazi transit camp to deliver eyewitness accounts of the unfolding Holocaust to the Allied powers. <\/strong><strong>Karski carried his reports to Britain and the United States, hoping that it would shake and awaken the conscience of the world leaders or \u2013 as he would call them &#8211; the Lords of Humanity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Jan Karski, alias \u201cWitold\u201d was an eyewitness to the atrocities and mass murders committed by the Nazis in occupied Poland. He was one of the first persons to reveal this information directly to the Western allied governments. He was an emissary of the Polish Underground State, sent to the Warsaw ghetto under cover on a mission to investigate the situation of Jews on the eve of the \u201cfinal solution\u201d. He aimed to reveal the shocking news about the tragedy of the Jewish people to the world. \u201cWithout the intervention of the Allies, the Jewish community will cease to exist in eighteen months&#8217; time\u201d, he reported in the so-called Karski Report, which was mostly based on the intel acquired firsthand, as an eyewitness. Regrettably, the information on the Holocaust, smuggled by Karski to the West, only made way to the 16<sup>th<\/sup> page of the New York Times. <em>Newsweek Magazine <\/em>named Jan Karski one of the most outstanding personalities of 20<sup>th<\/sup> century, calling his wartime mission one of the moral milestones of 20<sup>th<\/sup> century civilization. In London <em>The Times<\/em> remarked: \u201cMany would rank him alongside the better-known Oskar Schindler as one of the most courageous heroes of those dark years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the unquestionable qualities of Slawomir Gr\u00fcnberg\u2019s film are the animated reconstructions of several scenes, such as Karski\u2019s arrest by the Gestapo, his entry into the Warsaw ghetto (twice!) and transitional camp in Izbica, or his numerous conversations with &#8211; as Karski himself called them &#8211; \u201cthe lords of humanity\u201d, including Great Britain\u2019s Foreign Minister Anthony Eden or the President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt. Among the archival materials there are never-seen before interviews conducted by E. Thomas Wood, co-author of Karski &#8211; How One Man Tried to Stop the Holocaust, as well as little-known film footage and photographs. Besides the voice recordings of Karski himself, the audience will also be able to hear the comments of the people who knew him well, including the famous political scientist, the former U.S. National Security Advisor, prof. Zbigniew Brzezinski, the official biographer of Sir Winston Churchill, Sir Martin Gilbert <em>(<\/em><em>A turning point\u2026 From that moment, it was clear: This was a deliberate attempt to exterminate a whole people.) <\/em>or the former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Polish Republic, prof. Wladyslaw Bartoszewski (Bartoszewski, quoting Karski: <em>I wanted to save millions, but I could not save anybody at all.<\/em><em>)<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cTo me, Jan Karski was an incredibly brave young man, dedicated to the struggle for truth, justice and equality. Let&#8217;s remember he was barely 25 years old when the war began. He was asked to do something that most people would most likely refuse to do. Jan Karski was a man who was willing to sacrifice his own life in the name of humanity. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Karski is a universal, timeless hero, a role-model for the young generation all over the world. KARSKI &amp; THE LORDS OF HUMANITY is a ground-breaking cinematic event also because of the way it was made.\u00a0The addition of animated sequences illustrating the events never actually caught on camera significantly enhances the film\u2019s appeal. The viewers are able to better digest the content, bearing in mind how challenging and shocking it must be, especially for those who never encountered Karski\u2019s story.<\/p>\n<p>KARSKI &amp; THE LORDS OF HUMANITY is really a historical essay &#8211; it combines elements of a psychological portrait with cognitive and fact-finding cinema. At the same time, the story told in this film is universal, and should reach every viewer regardless of the origins or level of education.\u00a0The cognitive qualities of the film are immense &#8211; and can be viewed through the prism of historical as well as philosophical, psychological and social knowledge. On the one hand, the people interviewed by the author are commenting on the story of the main character, on the other, through archival footage of Jan Karski\u2019s interviews and creative animated sequences, the viewer gets to learn historical facts forming the backdrop of the story.\u00a0KARSKI &amp; THE LORDS OF HUMANITY is also a story about incredibly dramatic choices he had to make, giving an opportunity to present deep psychological and moral portrayal of a person facing extreme situations and decisions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The educational aspect of the film was of great importance to the filmmaker &#8211; hence the greatest attention to historical detail. Its accuracy was supervised, among others, by E. Thomas Wood, a historian and co-author of \u201cKarski: How One Man Tried to Stop the Holocaust\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>DIRECTOR\u2019s EXPLANATION<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>I am an independent filmmaker, living and working in the United States for the past 30 years, solely devoted to documentaries. The incredible story of Jan Karski, a historical figure, an eyewitness of the 20th century, with his biography reminiscent of a movie script, waited a long time to be told. Karski acted as a liaison between two continents on the matter of Jewish people.\u00a0<\/em><em>The subjects of the films I make are often difficult, sensitive and ambiguous. But if the films I make about the Jewish people lead to discussion, whereby the viewer learns something new and can perhaps even change, then that\u2019s great. It\u2019s good that they\u2019re troubling, I believe in trouble that builds something and prevents conflict. In the end, we do live so that we can leave a valuable trace, and I try to achieve that through my films. Jan Karski is a universal hero, a timeless figure, a role model for the young generation &#8211; in the US, in Poland, throughout the world.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>It\u2019s in the young people\u2019s nature to seek the meaning of life and proper moral standards. <\/em>KARSKI &amp; THE LORDS OF HUMANITY<em> proves that a seemingly banal question: \u201ccan I, as an individual, change the world?\u201d is worth asking.&#8221;\u00a0<\/em><em>For me, the knowledge that the cinema is so tremendously powerful and able to really \u201cchange the world\u201d is one of the key reasons why working on documentaries is exciting and worthy of utter dedication. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Slawomir Gr\u00fcnberg<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>JAN KARSKI &#8211; A BIOGRAPHY<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jan Karski<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Born Jan Kozielewski on 24 June 1914 in Lodz, died 13 July 2000 in Washington.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the interwar Poland, Jan Karski gained a law degree, also graduating from a diplomatic college and cadet school. Following the outbreak of WW2, he was imprisoned as a POW, managing to escape and becoming involved in the underground. Thanks to his extraordinary memory and knowledge of foreign languages, he was appointed emissary of the Polish Underground State. During one of his missions to France, Karski was arrested by the Gestapo. Following a brutal interrogation, he tried to commit suicide fearing he might reveal crucial information about Polish underground to the Germans. Resuscitated, he was placed in the prison hospital, from where he was liberated with the help from Polish Union of Armed Struggle.<\/p>\n<p>In the autumn of 1942, under the ongoing alias of Jan Karski, he traveled to the UK, from where he was sent to the United States in the summer of 1943. He was to present to the Allies his report on the situation of the Polish Underground State. One of his tasks was also to inform the international community of the tragic situation of the Jewish community under the German occupation &#8211; to collect information on this, Karski twice got through to the Warsaw ghetto, as well as the transitional camp in Izbica Lubelska. His shocking eyewitness accounts were handed over to the American and British politicians, journalists and artists. He met with, among others, the British Foreign Minister, Anthony Eden and the President of the United States &#8211; Franklin D. Roosevelt. However, his dramatic appeals for help for the Jewish people yielded no result \u2013 majority of the people he spoke to didn\u2019t believe him or ignored him.<\/p>\n<p>After the war, Jan Karski decided to remain in exile in the United States. He took a degree in political science and a doctorate at the Georgetown University in Washington, where he was a lecturer of international relations and theory of communism for the next 40 years.\u00a0Jan Karski was also the author of several books. His book on the activities of the Polish Underground State (Story of a Secret State), first published in the United States in 1944, soon became a bestseller, translated into many languages.<\/p>\n<p>During the last 20 years of his life, at various meetings in the United States, Poland and Israel, Jan Karski repeatedly retold his account of the mass extermination of Jewish people during WW2, and his attempts to make the world aware of this tragedy. Karski\u00a0received many prestigious awards &#8211; among others,\u00a0Yad Vashem recognized Karski as a Righteous Among the Nations, he received honorary doctorates from eight Polish and foreign universities and the Order of the White Eagle &#8211; Poland\u2019s highest decoration.\u00a0 In 1994, he received honorary citizenship of the State of Israel.\u00a0Here&#8217;s what he said on that occasion:\u00a0&#8220;This is the proudest and the most meaningful day in my life. Through the honorary citizenship of the State of Israel, I have reached the spiritual source of my Christian faith. In a way, I also became a part of the Jewish community&#8230; And now I, Jan Karski, by birth Jan Kozielewski \u2013 a Pole, an American, a Catholic \u2013 have also become an Israeli.&#8221;\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Jan Karski\u00a0was the founder of the Jan Karski and Pola Nirenska Award, granted each year by the YIVO in New York and the Jewish Historical Institute in Warsaw for publications depicting the role and contribution of Jews to the Polish culture.\u00a0In 2000, Jan Karski founded the Jan Karski Eagle Honorary Award, in recognition of forward-thinking Poles and for the contribution to Poland by non-Poles.\u00a0On May 29 2012, Jan Karski received a postmortem Presidential Medal of Freedom awarded by the President Barack Obama.<\/p>\n<p><strong>JAN KARSKI &#8211; A PERFECT ROLE MODEL FOR YOUNG PEOPLE. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>An interview with Slawomir Gr\u00fcnberg, director of KARSKI &amp; THE LORDS OF HUMANITY.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you prepare for the film about Karski?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Together with Katka Reszke,\u00a0who\u00a0later\u00a0became\u00a0the main film\u2019s screenplay writer\u00a0and film\u2019s co-editor, I spent two weeks at the Hoover Institute in Palo Alto, California. There, we found virtually all the materials related to Jan Karski, actually prepared by the man himself long before his death. This collection was wonderfully catalogued, in huge albums, and we just had to review it carefully. We also found video tapes from Karski\u2019s own collection in the archives. In Nashville, Tennessee, we visited E. Thomas Wood, the co-author of Karski: How One Man Tried to Stop the Holocaust. Tom Wood not only interviewed Karski for his book, but also recorded several hours of interviews on video tapes. In Betsheda, Maryland we visited Kaja Ploss, Karski\u2019s good friend and neighbour. We learned many interesting details related from her about the private life of Jan Karski.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did the concept of the film come to life, and how did it change?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I struggled with the film\u2019s concept because\u2026 how do you tell a story of something that happened 60-70 years beforehand, and whose main character is no longer alive? I fought against the concept of fictionalized documentary. I feel they are rarely successful. Often there\u2019s no money for good actors or production design and the results have a whiff of amateurishness about them. Finally, after seeing the feature-length animated historical film Waltz With Bashir in 2009, I thought this story can be best told through animation. Here, I must acknowledge my great experience and the fantastic work of the Polish animators, led by Tomek Niedzwiedz of Badi Badi. I\u2019m convinced that without his artistic vision our film would not be so visually powerful. It\u2019s the animated sequences which made Jan Karski speak to us in an exceptionally unique and contemporary language of creative animation. Thanks to Tomek and his team, the film is based partially on fictionalized, animated sequences combined with archival footage and interviews. Original, often never seen before interviews with Jan Karski form an essential part of the film. The voice of Jan Karski, preserved on the film and video tape conversations, is the basis of the film\u2019s narration. Besides all that, we applied the \u201ccollective narration\u201d convention by using the so-called \u201coffs\u201d from the people we encountered in our voyage through Jan Karski\u2019s life. The sparse commentary by Tom Wood, talking to Karski while writing his book, makes the core of our film and fills in the gaps in the overall narrative. Presenting the final version of the film, I also have to mention the artistic input and participation of Apple Film producers, especially Darek Jablonski (director of the Photographer) in the process of finalizing our project. Darek went far beyond the role of a typical producer responsible for contracts and finances. His creative input went from editing comments and sound design to suggestions regarding the choice of music. It\u2019s very satisfying and fortunate for the director to be able to work with a filmmaker whose artistic ideas are an extension of his own.<\/p>\n<p>From the very beginning I had a vision of a Polish-American co-production, a natural thing for this project with impact on its international distribution. I also have to admit that during my 30 years as a documentary filmmaker with over 45 films made to date, I have never encountered as many problems with a film, as with this project about Jan Karski. Surprisingly, raising funds for this kind of film in today\u2019s times was problematic. I didn\u2019t expect that at all. For example and despite much effort, KARSKI &amp; THE LORDS OF HUMANITY was completed without any support from the Polish Film Institute. So I therefore appreciate the contribution of all the institutions that finally decided to take part in this project even more \u2013 the Polish Television, the National Cultural Centre and the National Audiovisual Institute.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who was Jan Karski to you? What lessons should a modern viewer learn and understand?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>To me, Jan Karski was an incredibly brave young man, dedicated to the struggle for truth, justice and equality. Let&#8217;s remember he was barely 25 years old when the war began. Jan Karski was a man who was willing to sacrifice his own life in the name of humanity. It is also important to know that he didn\u2019t have to take such risks \u2013 smuggling himself in disguise to the Warsaw ghetto &#8211; twice! &#8211; and to the transit camp in Izbica Lubelska. He was asked to do something that most people would most likely refuse to do. Jan Karski was an exceptional person, and he makes a perfect role model for today\u2019s young people. A man who would sacrifice his own life for the sake of others.<\/p>\n<p>The way the powers that be reacted to his ardent attempts to convince the \u201cLords of Humanity\u201d, as Karski called them, that the Holocaust demanded the world\u2019s immediate reaction, is no different to the way the world is today. The Allies then, and the great powers of today, put their national interests before humanitarian values. We look on, as every day ISIS, the Islamist extremists in Syria, Iraq or Sudan (and not that long time ago the conflicted ethnic groups in Rwanda) carry out mass murders and atrocities based on religious or racial prejudices, with the world is just watching on idly, and the response &#8211; if any &#8211; usually comes too late or is too weak. We don\u2019t see mass demonstrations against the killings, against burning people alive, beheading, stoning, rapes, kidnapping and trade of children and women. If we imagine these groups creating their own death camps, and executions shown live on the Internet daily, I doubt we\u2019d see any reaction from our contemporary \u201clords of humanity\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Jan Karski was an eyewitness of the planned and precisely implemented machinery of extermination of Jewish people, and even his accounts were met with disbelief of many. Those he spoke to and those who responded were able to react and influence the decisions of the great powers. Even today, we see how much the world needs people like Jan Karski.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What kind of emotions will the film evoke in the viewer?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>First of all I would like to introduce Karski to the viewer who never encountered or never heard of him. I also would like to introduce him to those who heard about him, but still write about him in the context of an \u201cunaccomplished mission\u201d. Through this film, I want them to learn they were wrong. Through the words of historians, I try to prove that the so-called Karski Report and his meetings with the powers of the world brought great effect, perhaps not as great as he wished for, but great enough to influence concrete decisions that saved people\u2019s lives. I\u2019m convinced that KARSKI &amp; THE LORDS OF HUMANITY will easily find an audience amongst the people of middle-aged and older generations. I also believe that it will reach younger audiences, thanks to the animated sequences. Karski may become a role model. It\u2019s in the young people\u2019s nature to seek the meaning of life and proper moral standards. KARSKI &amp; THE LORDS OF HUMANITY proves that a seemingly banal question: \u201ccan I, as an individual, change the world?\u201d is worth asking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>As a filmmaker, what do you value most?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Knowing that film as a medium has such a tremendous power and ability to \u201cchange the world\u201d is one of the main reasons I work on documentaries. It\u2019s exciting and worth total dedication. The films I make are sometimes difficult, and the subjects &#8211; sensitive and ambiguous. It\u2019s good they\u2019re troubling; I believe in trouble that can build something and prevent conflict. I try not to come up with solutions, I leave it to the audience, I want to evoke emotions, make people face the fear of the unknown. The camera is a perfect weapon. It allows us to enter the world in the otherwise unavailable way. I\u2019m especially drawn towards projects telling stories of conflict, moral dilemmas, controversial subjects, and ones bringing on discussions. I like a challenge. Filmmaking is also a great adventure and &#8211; what\u2019s most exciting about documentaries \u2013 about the unexpected finds. I\u2019m convinced that KARSKI &amp; THE LORDS OF HUMANITY can become an important film.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You said once, that you\u2019re a \u201cmessenger\u201d, a \u201clink\u201d between two continents on the Jewish subject. Is that your mission?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My mission is to try to improve the world through my films. For more than 30 years I\u2019ve lived and worked in the United States. I\u2019m an independent filmmaker working solely on documentaries. Since I immigrated to the US from Poland, a country which is so different, I have a great curiosity towards it \u2013 and that gives me a different perspective than the people who were born and raised here. Jan Karski became an American despite his thick accent, of which he never got rid. It\u2019s not a matter of a passport, but rather of thoughts, observations, discoveries and openness towards a human life. It was Karski who was a real link between two continents. I\u2019m nowhere near his greatness. If, through my films on the Jewish subject, I\u2019m able to generate some kind of discussion, make people learn something new, maybe even change &#8211; that\u2019s great, I\u2019m really happy about it.
